2CV, un fabuleux destin

by Serge Defradat

(French) The cover of this book will tell you at first glance  what’s inside: a real 2CV, 2CV scale models in all sorts of materials, a postage stamp with a post office 2CV, a 2CV keyring, and even a Swiss knife in the shape of a 2CV.

The author is a painter and it shows in the artistic photos. All the illustrations have a strong character and I surmise that the graphic designer’s work must have been a nightmare! However, she did a great job of it.

Everything on this iconic car seems to have already been written but this book uses a different angle. Most of the illustrations used here have never or rarely been seen before. All aspects and representations of the 2CV have been crammed into 160 pages and illustrated in elaborate and artistic settings: prototypes, posters, adverts, catalogs, flyers, competition cars, toys and scale models, films, postcards, cartoons, rallyes and raids, comic strips, stamps, ashtrays, promotional items, paintings, sculptures, medals, keyrings, song lyrics, knives, hairpieces, clothes, 3D photos, biscuits and chocolates! No matter the medium, creators never seem to have run out of imagination. After reading this book, no doubt you will be brimming with ideas to start a dozen collections of your own . . . even if it involves a different car!

The text is often reduced to the photo captions, which is good news to those who are still struggling with French. But occasionally, as in the chapter about the 2CV in films, the text will fill most of the space, so as to tease you into watching the films. Twenty-five chapters spread over only 160 pages mean that each chapter is short. As they are independent of each other you can start start reading anywhere. The first chapters present the car itself, with its variants, from the 1936 prototypes to the late 1984 luxury Charleston edition but the author also elaborates on the cross-continent raids and various competitions in which the 2CV often excelled, either in real life or in cartoon strips !

I enjoyed the chapter on scale models because all scales and all materials are considered and the models are photographed against all kinds of artistic backgrounds in a very realistic manner in hundreds of photos! Then it’s time for a humouristic treatment featuring the 2CV in comic strips and cartoons. There are even lyrics of songs about the deudeuche!

If you’re looking for a serious historico-technical book on the 2CV, this one is not for you. There exists a good dozen of those, even in English (but none very good), but if you’re looking for a special experience, a moment of pure bliss, I strongly recommend this one. It’s all about the 2CV except about the car itself. I would say it is a slice of sociology with a hint of art and history.

It’s not because I once owned a 2CV and might feel nostalgic that I enjoyed this book very much. No, it’s the quality of the pictures, the graphic design, land the variety of the illustrations placed in particularly well chosen settings. Whether you are into 2CVs or not, the book will definitely make an ideal Christmas present because it covers such a large range of interests. And if you are not a collector yet—no matter of what—you’ll probably get the bug now !
