Beyond Fundamental Carburetion

The Evolution of Fuel and Engine Control Systems

by Dean G. Tryon

“While the principles described in “Fundamental Carburetion” still apply, the devices had to evolve to meet the ever-tightening emissions requirements.”

This book, the sequel to Fundamental Carburetion, covers The Evolution of Fuel and Engine Control Systems picking up from where the prior book left off bringing information up to current day. Knowing and understanding the information in this book will be helpful even if you aren’t personally hands-on under the hood. As with its predecessor, although the material covered is technical in nature, author Dean Tryon explains all so clearly that all readers will understand.

If you don’t know what the EGR valves look like, now you will—both early ones and current ones—and how each works.

Tryon divides the information into two phases. During the two decades, sixties and seventies, changes were mainly precipitated by legislation. From the 1980s on, computers controlling automobile engine functions had the greatest impact.

The eleven chapters cover detailed explanations of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves, mass air flow sensors, and more. There are diagrams and explanations of the inner workings of catalytic converters, fuel injection systems, and electronic control modules.

As Tryon writes in his Introduction, “The antique car hobby continues to evolve. … Cars from the 1970s and 1980s, [all of] which are equipped with emissions control devices … have been part of the hobby. … We are beginning to see cars from the 2000s becoming an important part of the hobby.”

There are two types of catalytic converters. You see and learn about each as well as exhaust oxygen sensors.

As a bonus if you happen to be one of those who intended to obtain your own copy of the first volume (Fundamental Carburetion) but haven’t quite gotten around to doing so yet, purchasing from the FundamentalCarburetion.com website, you’ll find both purchased together for $48 is a $5 saving from purchasing them individually. For once, procrastination pays off!

Throttle body and port fuel induction are discussed and shown as well.

Those reading these words who are engaged in instructing future automotive technicians or restorers at either the high school or college levels, and trade schools, there’s a special offer available. Dean Tryon has created PowerPoint slides to enable instructors to give lectures and presentations right from the pages of his Fundamental Carburetion and Beyond Fundamental Carburetion books.
